My Story

The story so far…..

The Rebellion has destroyed the Imperial base and our heroes are hidden in a local brothel when suddenly whoops wrong story! Sorry.

Last October (1997), 2 slightly jaded people (a woman from Canada & a man from the UK) began to talk to each other over the Internet using ICQ, long e-mails and chat rooms. The talk was of normal things, two people asking each other questions about this and that. Slowly and over a period of several weeks they become to look forward to the daily conversations that are held over the Internet and occasionally over the phone. The distance between them is more than 3000 miles but for a period of time each day they are together as they talk about their day in work and make each other laugh.

In early December the woman mentions that because some of her family live in the UK, that she is travelling over to see them in January and it would be interesting for them to meet up then. They both become closer as the days pass quickly. He realizes that he cares deeply about this woman and finds himself more than a little scared about their forthcoming meeting. They have exchanged many pictures of each other but both are apprehensive of what might happen.

January comes around quickly and soon it's the day that they are due to meet. They have arranged to both stay at a friends house in Maidstone in Kent. The woman has been there for 2 days already so the man boards the train and futility tries to relax. The journey lasts just over 3 hours. As he steps off the train onto the platform he looks around for this woman who, he has finally admitted to himself, he has fallen in love with. He walks slowly towards the exit of the station and he suddenly sees her. It is like she is an old friend. They hug and then shyly smile at each other.

They decide that its time to eat so they find a restaurant in a shop and sit down to eat. Only as they sit down do they realize that they are both conscious of watching and being watched by the other person. They smile and laugh about the situation and they become accustomed to each others face. They leave the food that they have failed to finish and make their way around the shopping centre. They joke and start holding hands.

After walking around for about half an hour they realize that they have walked down a quiet street. The man turns to the woman and kisses her deeply. They stand in the street oblivious to everything around them as they kiss and hold each other tightly.

We were engaged in March which left us just under 7 months to plan our perfect wedding. It would have been easier if Nathan hadn’t been living 3000 miles away at the time though. The first thing that was booked was the hall, we figured if nothing else we could organize the best reception since Tommy Lee married Pamela Anderson.

Neither of us knew anything about weddings, what it takes to plan one or even if we could get married legally. Being on two separate continents didn’t help matters either.

We found a minister who was very nice and very helpful, Rev. Phil Uptgrove of St. John’s Anglican Church in St. Thomas. He assured us we could legally be married, and that he would be happy to officiate the ceremony. He even went out of his way to reschedule a rehearsal he had booked because we wanted our ceremony to be at 7 o’clock in the evening on a Friday.

So we had the who (Nathan & Julie), the what (get married), the where (St. John’s Anglican Church), the why (because we are madly, deeply and passionately in Love) but we had no idea how we would pull it all off.

We managed to acquire a wonderful wedding party. Sandra Magri was the Maid of Honour. Theresa Meehan was a Bride’s Maid and Chelsey Meehan was our Flower Girl. Chuck Weber was the Best Man and due to the circumstances he earned that title and our undying gratitude. Don Butler and Mike Pineau were our ushers.

Fast forward to the wedding day…

The day was a bit cloudy and there was a distinct chill in the air, it almost felt as if it were going to snow (Could it really be Hell freezing over?) The women got together to decorate the hall, while the men went out to play pool. The hours and minutes passed and at 4:30 the doorbell rang, it was the photographer, which was a shock to both him and the people getting ready at the house. He wasn’t expected to show up until 5:30. He apologized and said he would return in an hour.

That was the quickest hour, before we knew it we were getting our photos taken in an assortment of poses and it wasn’t long before the limo arrived to find out the location of the best man and groom. This was it, a few more last minute snap shots and the limo returned to collect the rest of the wedding party and both sets of parents.

Meanwhile, the guests were anxiously waiting the arrival of the Bride and Groom at the church.

The church was filling with the close friends and family of the soon to be married couple. The setting sun shone through the many stained glass windows to cast a romantic mood over the entire church. The organist was quietly playing off in the corner as the ushers sat the last of the arriving guests. The heads were turning toward the back of the church in hopes of catching that first glimpses of the bride.

Finally the minister, the best man and the groom entered the church from the side door. The church was hushed. The groom appeared quite relaxed as he stood awaiting the entrance of bride. Dressed in a sleek black tuxedo, no one would have guessed that underneath he was sporting Wyle E Coyote socks...or maybe they would have. The toll of the last few busy days was no where to be seen on Nathan’s face as he stood, eyes fixed on the back of the church. The best man looked somber as the nerves of his position took over, finally the minister nodded toward the organist, indicating that the time was here. With the parents of the groom seated and the mother of the bride in her place the church was suddenly filled with the sounds of the organ playing trumpet voluntaire.

As the guests stood, gazing at the girl’s graceful accent down the aisle the flower girl appeared. Chelsey looked like a tiny doll in her flowing flower girl dress. She tightly hung onto her hoop of flowers, with eyes fixed straight ahead, she slowly made her way down the aisle.

To the melodious sounds of the church organ, the bride appeared in the aisle walkway with her father. Julie looked absolutely gorgeous in her ivory dress and headpiece. Wearing her hair in a French roll, her face became the focus for all the guests. It was obvious that the groom was fully aware of the beauty that stood before him as he watched Julie walk down the aisle on her father’s arm.

Julie looked perfectly calm as she smiled at her friends and families and made her way to the front of the long aisle where Nathan waited to take her arm and begin the wedding ceremony.

The exchange of smiles between the bride and groom was lost on no one. It was a look of adoring love, a smile of confidence and bliss that this day was here, their day...the day they had been working toward for the last few months. To the on lookers it appeared that the couple were already united, already as one, even with out the exchange of vows. The voice of the minister seemed to bring every one back to the task at hand.

Through is description of the ceremony, the minister led the guests and the couple through the wedding rites and rituals, he explained the reasons for the words and the meanings. The entire ceremony was a wonderful profession of a couple’s love. It was a magical evening in every way.

The minister led the couple through their exchange of vows, their promise to one another, to be there, forever...a public profession of what they already felt for one another. Julie and Nathan spoke in clear voices as they looked one another in the eye and declared their love. The guests were almost spellbound by the intensity of the couple.

The exchange of vows and rings was sealed with a gentle yet passionate kiss. It was as if the couple had been made one and in witnessing this act, the guest could almost feel their own vows strengthened; perhaps this is a small purpose of attending such a beautiful event.

The ceremony quickly moved to the signing of the register. As the bride and groom stood with their wedding party, the guests watched the light chatter between them. They looked so content, as if they had been born for this day. As the groom stood watching his bride sign the register, he looked over at his parents and offered a smile to them, they returned his smile through their tears.

The minister announced Mr. and Mrs. Leeds to those in attendance as they once again took center stage. The organist played once more, and as the sun set further into the night, the stain glass windows continued to dance with the fading rays of day and the candles as the bride and groom, arm in arm, smiled on their way out of the church.

Footnote: Everytime you date a new person, they add something to your life, your personality, even your mind. Even though I may not have been the nicest boyfriend to those girls I dated before, without them, I would not have been where I am today, happily married and almost grown up. Thank you very much, each and everyone of you.
