How to make or delete a chat room

A citizen can set up up to 6 regular rooms of  his/her own. This is how to make a room:

  1. Click [Controls] and go to your control room.
  2. Click [Room Controls] and it opens a form.
  3. Enter a name (room ID) - not longer as 8 letters.
  4. Click the MakeChange button

Note 1:
If you don't succeed to make a room, it is probably because you're using a room name which already is in use. Try with another room name.

Note 2:
As soon you've succeeded to make a room - the room appears as a link in the form. If you click the link it will open the room form from which you can set up or change your rooms properties.

Note 3:
As soon you've succeeded to make a room, SOI automatically has made a room directory (folder)  on the SOI server - in which you can store files.

This is how to delete an existing room

  1. Click [Controls] and go to your control room.
  2. Click [Room Controls] and it opens a form. All your rooms are displayed in the form as links.
  3. Enter the room name (room ID) - and check the delete option.
  4. Click the MakeChange button

Note:
If you delete a room - you'll also delete the room's room directory (folder) on the SOI server and all it's contents.

Change the room properties

As soon as you've set up a new room, you can start to change it's properties. You can click the room link in the form from which you've "added" the room. You also can open the room set up form the following way:

  1. Click [Controls] and go to your control room.
  2. Click [Room Controls] and it opens a form. All your rooms are displayed in the form as links.
  3. Click the room link of your choice

These are all the room properties which you can change freely:

hpbutt.gif (1221 bytes) This button opens a new form with a simple text editor with which you can construct a web page associated with this particular room. The editor automatically saves the page in the proper room file directory and names it as "homepage.html". A room visitor can open and view this page by clicking the room title at the top of the room.
name.gif (1230 bytes) Here you can enter a room title. The title is always displayed at the top of your room, closely followed by the room's name (ID) enclosed within parentheses.
catag.gif (4996 bytes) Here you can select in which section of  SOI you want to locate your room. This way  someone can find your room when she/he "travels" to that specific section of SOI. If your room is a private room, select "Private Area".
qref.gif (1754 bytes) The sos@soi or qref@soi options will add an extra [Qref] control in your room with which someone can be moved to a quick reference page about either the State of Submission or the State of Insanity.
owner.gif (1114 bytes) As a citizen, you can have up to 6 registered nicknames. Open the drop down menu and select any of your nicknames as the room owner.
Room Text Left Side Chat Box Here you can enter text and/or hyper- or room links. If you want to add additional links, part them with a <br> tag (=line break), like: #r-soi<br>#r-z1

Note: If you format the contents with HTML - then you have to close the tags properly - or else the tags will affect the chat text in the room.

Room Text Under Chat Box Here you can enter text and/or hyper- or room links.

Note: If you format the contents with HTML - then you have to close the tags properly - or else the tags will affect the chat text in the room.

counter.gif (4526 bytes) Here you can choose to display a hit counter at the bottom of your room. If you want to set up a "Frame Color", you have to enter the Hex value of the color. Check SSR's color chart. With the "Digit Style" you can use a number of counter formats.

server.gif (2459 bytes)

From this drop down menu you you can select the SOI server you would like your room to be located on. The default value is the best server for the moment though. You can change server any time you want, but remember that the current contents of the room will be lost after a change- i.e. the room will be cleared but it won't affect your room set up.
roomform.gif (5684 bytes) Depending on your intention with your room, you can select a suitable room format.  If your room is suppose to be a chat room then select something among the #9 - #12 options. Here you also can enable or disable the display of avatars in your room

roomacc.gif (5717 bytes) Depending on your intention with your room, you can select a suitable room access level.  If your room is supposed to be a chat room, you can choose one of the following options:
  • FREE (open to all)
  • PUBLIC (open to citizens and 28-hour visa holders only)
  • PRIVATE (open to those you invite there only)

Note: All free and public rooms at SOI echo the conversation to the Tower of Babble ([SeeAll]). Private rooms do not. You have no control over whether a room echoes to the Tower or not other than selecting the type of room.

language.gif (3750 bytes) Here you can select the language with which you want to display your room controls.
bkgrfile.gif (9365 bytes) From the Background File and/or the Icon File dropdown lists you can select the background and/or room icon for your room. The default value of the Background File is /state/frgback.jpg.

Note 1: The icon file will automatically be displayed at the top left-hand corner of your room. You can however achieve the same result by using the <IMG> tag in the "Text for Top Level of Room" box further below.

Note 2: Both files must have been uploaded to your room directory (folder) on the SOI server first!

roomcol.gif (1800 bytes) Here you can:
  • enter a background color for your room. If you just want to use a plain color as a background in your room, you have to change the Background File value to *none*
  • set up the color:
    • for the text in your room
    • for the links in your room
    • for the link after it has been used (=VLink)
    • for the link when it is getting clicked (=ALink)

Note: The color values have to be entered as either color codes or a color name.

Here you can enter any text, hyper- or room links of your choice. The contents of the text box will be displayed on top of the room.

Note 1: If you format the text with HTML - then you have to close the tags properly - or else the tags will affect the chat text in the room.

This option is only available for private rooms. From here you can set up a password(s) for a visitor(s) that you want to invite.

Note 2: Don't forget to delete the password(s) after your chat session with someone!

Click the button as soon as you've made one or more room property changes.
