Suzy
Unlike most, I didn’t bring no baggage to the City. ‘Least I don’t think so.
I was born and raised in a little southern California farmin’ town called Beaumont. My dad was a 9-5 heavy equipment mechanic and mom stayed home. They passed on a few years back, probably ‘cuz they’d done all they set out to.
Started workin’ at the local coffee shop after school while I was in 10th grade. When I got outta high school, I moved on up to bein’ a hostess at a nearby steak house, and on my 21st birthday got promoted to waitress. The tips got better and I paid my own way to bartender school so’s I could learn a real trade.
Once I got good at it, I got a shot tendin’ bar on the off hours, and ‘fore long got to be the full time bartender at the steak house. Sure loved the work, the tips, and the cool people, regulars and them that was just passin’ through.
Somewheres around my mid-30’s, probably ‘cuz I’d heard too many stories by then, I figured time was runnin’ out, so I tied the knot with a local hunk been askin’ me ever since I could remember.
That lasted about 5 years ‘til I caught him foolin’ around and kicked him out.
Sorta gimme a wake-up call. Here I was, pushin’ 40 with nuthin’ to show for it ‘cept pretty good bar tendin’ skills and a few bucks in my pocket.
Decided it was high time I see the world, so I quit my job, stuffed what I had in a suitcase, and spent half my money on a cross-country train ride headin’ for The City. Seen some awesome stuff on the way, but ended up in a dilapidated loft just outside the City limits.
Money was just about gone when bingo! I lucked into a one night gig payin’ a bundle. Next thing I know, I got hired at the jazz place and I swear I ain’t makin’ this up, some Chinese guy delivered take out while I’m interviewin’ for the job and gets me into a really nifty #r-sassypad(pad) over this restaurant. Smack dab in the middle of The City.
Now I got me a job managin' at Raymond's Lounge and a cat name of Oreo what I done rescued from the shelter.
Life don’t get no better’n this. Does it?
