Van Helsing
Harker
Belmont
The Holy Trinity of European Vampire Hunters. All three families’ lineage goes back to the middle ages. All three names are legendary. The most famous, is of course Van Helsing. The hit Hugh Jackman film is evidence enough of that. However the other two names aren’t far behind. The Harker name appears intertwined in Dracula mythos, as well as appearing in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie starring Sir Sean Connery. The Belmonts are possibly the least known of the “Trinity”. They may also be the most successful. Historians have tried to patch the origins of this renowned clan of Hunters, with little help from the Belmonts themselves. The first in the long line of Belmont vampire hunters is believed to be Leon Belmont—A renowned knight and respected noble, who lived sometime in the 11th century. The exact circumstances are unknown (and naturally the Belmonts haven’t allowed any probing of their extensive family records), but it is believed that Leon became a hunter after losing someone close to him. The first vampire killed by a Belmont (or anyone else on record) was Walter Bernhard. Bernhard held dominion in Western Europe (Or perhaps Transylvania, the accounts vary) for two centuries in a dense forest which he used arcane magic to enchant into a den of eternal night. His death sent a palpable shockwave through the undead community. Other vampires rose up to challenge Leon, all failed.
Vampire hunting passed from Leon to his son. It is said that Leo swore an oath that he and every Belmont after him would hunt those who prowl the night until they were no more. That oath has endured for a millennium. While it can be argued that each Belmont is a better vampire killer than the last, there are two who stand out in the family’s long storied history. Richter Belmont, who lived in the late 18th century, was the most ruthless and inspired vampire hunter of any of the Belmonts.
Richter was a very pious man. His belief in his quest and in God was unwavering. For this, he was given a special blessing. He was granted an inner light which gave him a degree of protection against the undead. He couldn’t be infected with Lycanthropy. He was immune to vampiric voice and gaze, and he was hard to charm or control in general. And his blood was made so pure that no vampire could stand to drink of it. These abilities are still imbued into the bloodline, thought they have diminished over time. And of course, the tale would be untold if it omitted the greatest Belmont of them all: Simon Belmont.
Simon was the greatest of the breed, and he also has the most well-documented biography. Simon Belmont was the first Belmont believed to have actually killed Count Dracula. In fact, he’s believed to be the only man to ever accomplish the feat. Had the Cult of Vlad not resurrected him five years later, perhaps Dracula’s legend would have died with him. Simon faced Dracula three times, and three times he defeated him; hiding away the foul creature’s heart so it could not be returned to the body and made whole again. Simon is the reason that, even with the purity Richter brought to the bloodline in the 1700’s, the blood of a Belmont is a sought-after delicacy.
Fast forward to the 21st Century, and this generation’s chosen slayer. It should be noted that while there may be many Belmont children born in a generation, it is only the first born son of a generation who becomes the slayer. In this century, that man is Simon Richter Belmont, 28, originally of Yorkshire, England. However he has recently ventured to the United States. He is believed to be the most powerful slayer since Richter. For legality purposes he is recognized as a vampire executioner in the United States; however this does not permit him to hunt or harass them without probable cause. Why then, does he venture to the States? It is his distinct belief that there is a Vampire conspiracy within the United States government, and if it isn’t halted soon the world will be overrun with vampires. Bearing the names of his two most revered forbearers, Simon Richter refuses to see a day when Vampires rule the world.
