She was born Sara Walters. Her childhood was unremarkable. She grew up going to fine schools, dressed in expensive clothes. And if she was a little lonely or neglected, her father would slip her money... her mother would send her a new sweater. She was not abused nor were her needs neglected. From the outside, she had it all. On the inside, she was lost.
She graduated with honours, of course... no Walters had ever done less. Her father saw to it that she entered a prestigious law school and paid for her to live off campus. When she spoke of friends and offers to join clubs, he frowned. Her father had never needed to growl or yell at her. His displeasure was enough to frighten her. And so, she went through college as she went through her childhood... alone... isolated. Once again, she made her father proud.
Sara did all that was expected of her. By the time she graduated, law firms were clamouring to hire her. They all sort of ran together, so she let her father chose the right one. Even in this, she was sheltered... surrounded by her father's friends. Her mother did as she always had... sending clothes and jewelry, but always finding a reason for not visiting.
Meeting Nick changed her life. He swept in, full of the fire for life... he was charming and handsome... funny and attentive. There wasn't an associate in the company who didn't want him. That went for a good number of the men as well. And those who didn't want Nick wanted to be Nick. Especially when he began dating the beautiful, shy protege. Before long, they were seen all over town. Nick, looking suave and in control... Sara, looking bewildered and full of rich joy. The dream lasted for a few months. Long enough for her to fall deliriously in love.
The first time he hit her, she was too stunned to cry. If asked now, she'd tell you she can't remember what set him off. And that would be a lie. Every detail is carved into her memory. The moments after that, however, blur together. For that night was the first step on what would be a horrific journey. Over the next several years, Sara learned how to cover bruises and create the mask she still wears.
