Hi all, I am
Modesty McAndrews
Profile and Herstory
(as at Thu, 06 May 2009)
My profile is based on My RT. You decide how much, that with which you feel comfortable.
I am 22 years old, 5' 9", have auburn hair and hazely green eyes. Depending on the lighting, sometimes some say they look greeny hazel.
I come from a Family whose ancestry has been traced back to at least 459 years. I hope I can continue the research started, and add more to it.
Right now, I am in My second year at university, studying Business Organisation, Law and the Management of Technology.
Right after high school I went East on a gap year. I was due to go with a friend and her sister, but their family circumstance changed at the last minute, and I was left with a choice of going on My own, or not going at all. I chose the former.
On hindsight, I would not recommend anyone going on her or his own, let alone a girl. But, I did, and was lucky. My Family trusted Me, as I had been brought up in a responsible and stable manner, never having got into any serious trouble during My childhood and while at high school.
I gained a lot from My gap year. I learned more about life, and the harsh reality of life, than I think I would have, had I not gone East. My good fortune was that I was taken under the wing of a delightful old man, old enough to be My grandfather, but who looked like he could have been My great-grandfather.
While I had always worked out, My Old Man introduced Me to the serious art of self-defence, and, as he said, the Western interpretation of the phrase "martial arts" is what causes problems with many who learn this art. It is self-defence, and should not be used as an offensive weapon.
I have not used it many times, but it has saved Me from a few sticky situations. There is at least one guy who will never be able to use his right hand as well as he could, and a girl whose knee will always be dicky. They should have kept their distance. I still work out, every day. Working out has become a part of My daily life, like eating and sleeping. Fortunately, I have never needed to use My shooting skills against a human being, although a knife has been used.
Apart from learning how to take care of Myself, I learned even more about people, their differences and being tolerant of differences. They have a right to be who they are. By the same token, I also have a right to be who I am. I never have been, and never will be, a doormat for anyone, male or female, and I do not accept fools gladly.
Get to know Me, and you will find Me a staunch, supportive friend. Try to impose on Me and you will soon learn that you are not worthy of My company, and what I think of you. The key to getting on with Me is good manners. Cavemen and neanderthals never have, and never will, stand a chance.
When I returned from the East, while waiting to go to university, I spent a little while getting accustomed to getting back to learning by going to night school. I started university, but, as a very observant Professor told Me, it seemed My itch to travel was still very strong, and she advised Me to take another year out to get travelling out of My system, otherwise I would be wasting My time at uni. She said it would be better to return to a more stable stay at uni. So, I took another year out. This time I travelled around Europe, on My own. After the East, Europe was a dawdle.
Europe was in distinct contrast to the East, and expanded My horizons even more, as what I saw and learned, I did with a perception that had been already widened by My stay in the East. Europe was fascinating. The food, the clothes, the sights, the people. Although I had never gone without, My first hand experience of life in the luxury zone was embraced readily, eagerly, leaving Me with a love of quality at the highest possible level.
As I have said, My Family's roots have been traced back to at least 459 years. One of My ancestors began merchanting in the early Victorian era, and built an empire that stretched from Tokyo to London. In the old days, it was said the sun never set on the British Empire. So it was with the Family business, with the exception of the New World. In time, as with the British Empire, the Family business contracted, and diversified. Prudence dictated, and the Family got involved in all manner of commerce, with one third in land, one third in long-term investment and one-third cash, to be used for commerce and taking care of Family members. A fund provides for all, depending on their need. I am well provided for, and have enough to enjoy a comfortable life.
While at high school, I worked My placements in the Family business. As Father said, "Never work for anyone else. You will be your best boss, but never slacken and take things for granted." Almost all of My placement projects were successful. But, that had nothing to do with being a member of the Family. I had to prove Myself at every turn, making sure what I said could be proved, at every stage. This was valuable training, even in a Family business.
When I returned from Europe, while waiting to go to uni, I worked, unpaid, apart from expenses, investigating areas of diversion for the Family business. This was the time when the property world was soaring. My research led Me to believe the trend of the ever-increasing property values
could not last. Even though I could not tell when the trend would stop, I just felt, strongly, that it would. I researched other trends, to see their length of their life-cycles. This played a key part in My suggestion that the Family should divest the top end of its property portfolio.
My presentation was not well received by the investment managers, specially as they had had years of experience compared to a young woman almost straight from school. My high school placements had given Me a good reputation, as I had always researched My work well, and could substantiate everything I reported or said. This was different. I was talking big money.
There were meetings, discussions, often heated. Eventually, due to trust, My proposal was accepted by the Board, in camera. There were some resignations in protest, but I was looking in the right direction. Several large chunks were sold, and within 14 months, the property market started to collapse. My Family made a good 35% profit by selling early.
Some of those properties have now been bought back, at the bottom of the market. I had a choice of accepting a hefty bonus, or having it invested in a separate fund for Me, for when I needed funds. I chose the latter, as I have enough to live the style I like. Of course, I can't have any and everything I want, but that is the reality of life, no one can.
A boating incident paved the way for My leaving England and coming to The City. As I had already proved Myself to be responsible at an earlier age, there was no barrier to My leaving England and studying in The City. Of course, having always lived in My own home, I wanted to get one when I arrived in The City. It so happened the RSI Towers were for sale at the time, for $1.2 billion, the value of what they cost to build. Without inspection, without immediate funds, I decided to buy RSI Towers.
Mr Raymond Shaw, although a shrewd businessman, is a delightful gentleman. One of the very few who can rightly be called a gentleman, without a shadow of doubt. Mr Raymond Shaw and I negotiated only by word of mouth, voice mail and short messages. There were none of those big high-powered meetings where My people would contact His people to make arrangements to meet with a trailer load of sef-opinionated advisers.
We negotiated in the best way, principal to principal. Mr Raymond Shaw, realising I was a recent arrival in the City, without even a place to stay, agreed to give Me a few days grace. Again, by word of mouth. I contacted My Family Trust, and the discussion ended with the Family Trust giving Me the funds, on the condition that I treat the investment as a business and run it as a business.
While this interferes with My studies, My degree subjects are an umbrella for MM Investments, the owners of the RSI Towers. So, while MM Investments own The City's most prestigious landmark site, I work for MM Investments. Naturally, with this size of investment, One cannot leave it vulnerable, and One must also do One's bit for The City in which One lives, its Cityzens, the community and the environment.
So here I am. A working woman, studying, keeping abreast of life and trying to do My bit to improve the Community Life. There just don't seem to be enough hours in a day to get through everything.
Where now? As W/we say in England, onward and upward!
