One of the benefits of being Silas Ford's little girl was opportunity. She got the opportunity to spend her early teen years aboard the Natchez Queen, her father's riverboat. Later, she was educated in a fine lady's college in the East, where she met Thomas Bester. An officer at West Point, he had pledged his love to her just after graduating. His first posting was at the dark field of Appomatax, and as the number of dead and wounded was tallied, he was added to the list of soldiers "missing, presumed dead"

Katherine grieved for him, but in time she started noticing that life moved on. And so did she. After her father sold his riverboat and opened a bank in Topeka with his friend and business partner, Will Pegg, she accepted a job with them as one of the bank officers. For several years she was a pillar of the business, even after Will Pegg quit and moved on to other places to do other things. As long as she was with her daddy, Kate was going to be all right. Mother is named Martha, older sister named Honoria.
