Karen Spencer - City Attorney

She had been named First Assistant District Attorney, according to City District Attorney Hamilton Burger. Prior to her appointment, she served as an Assistant District Attorney for the City of Los Angeles. Between 1995- 1998, she has served as Captain of the Los Angeles Sex Crimes Unit.

The First Assistant District Attorney is second in command in the District Attorney's Office and acts as the District Attorney in his absence. As supervisor of the legal staff, she oversees all operations in the DA's offices, including personnel, policy matters, special assignments, and case assignments. In addition, she maintains a caseload of serious, complicated cases she prosecutes personally.

She works closely with The City Police Department, providing legal advice and training on legal issues. She lectures frequently on topics related to criminal investigations and prosecution. For her role in homicide and sex crimes prosecutions, she received awards of commendation from many California law enforcement and judicial agencies.

She attended the University of California at Berkley, graduating in 1987 with a B.A. in Criminology. In 1992, she earned her law degree from the Willamette University College of Law, Salem, Oregon. The fact that there were only a half dozen women in her class didn’t faze her. She was raised in a family of three girls whose parents always assumed they could do anything.

She is admitted to the California Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of the United States. She is a member of the National District Attorney’s Association, for which she has lectured, and is a member of the City County Bar Association.

She won't disclose her personal life with anyone. Has been business only and doesn't plan to change that. She prefers the solitudes of her studies, and her books.
