Not quite two decades ago, Jane was found on the steps of Our Lady of Perpetual Virginity, wrapped in, of course, swaddling blankets and tucked into, of course, a basket. The good sisters of Virginity took her in without hesitation and gave her a home. Her days were filled with gentle words and harsh reprimands when needed, with the greatest of Ladies always watching and Our Lord watching over them all. She was brought up to be pious and demure, well educated, well spoken, and above all... a lady
Upon reaching the appropriate age, she was gently but firmly encouraged to take vows and join the convent. As much as she loved the good sisters, and as grateful as she was to them, the austere life was not for her. She was a lady, yes, but she had hopes for children of her own some day... hopes for finding herself a gentleman who would understand that his sinful needs were meant for one purpose alone. The sisters were disappointed, but understanding, and did everything they could to send her out into the world prepared.
She was given extra clothing, two small bags, and an even smaller supply of coins... and set in the direction of The Big City. Her first day on the road was a wonder. All her life, she'd been watched over. Suddenly, she was alone and free. She passed a night at an Inn, shivering in her nightclothes as drunken brawls and offkey singing filtered through the floor.
Her second night, though, would change her life... spin her world out of control...
Darkness fell swift, and she was far from a town. But in the distance, she saw the lights of a manor house... and within, a kind, handsome gentleman offered her shelter.
How could she know that she had placed herself in the care of Night's darkest creatures? How could she know...
