Background:

The Strelizia are a rare species of bird, found only in a small area of the unseelie realm. Because of their human-like appearance, they are often mistaken for rare angels by those who aren't knowledgeable about their kind. In fact, they are distantly related to the more conventional fae, something that few outside that group know.

Male Strelizia possess a voice of unearthly beauty, like nothing heard anywhere else. Historically, they were pitted against poisonous snakes by the other unseelie during banquets. If the Strelizia sang well, the snake would be charmed - if not, the snake would bite the bird's head off. In this way, only the Strelizia with the most beautiful voices survived to breed. This singing is heard only at night, and if the bird has found an owner, they have been known to sing until their throats bled if they didn't see their owner's face.

The females of the species do not sing, nor are they as radiant as the males. In mating, the female will eat the male after the act is performed. This provides nourishment for the child growing in her. The male will sing up until the time his head is devoured, and then he will fall silent.
