Hauru Tatsuya - known as "Howl" by his teachers and peers, is a transfer student from Japan. Always respectful and polite, the circumstances by which he was raised allows him to speak English in a manner unaccented by his Asian background. With a voice low in timbre, and unhurried as to carefully formulate well-thought-out words, he speaks and sounds as a born and bred British gentleman.

Temple of the Eternal Dragon

Hailing from Japan, Howl spent much of his life training his Wizarding skills with the priests at the Temple of the Eternal Dragon, located on Mount Iwaki on the northern tip of the island of Honshu, Japan. This temple is a well kept secret by the few in the neighboring town who know about it - including Howl's parents, who live in said town.

It is a fact that this Temple is almost legendary in Japan, and one had to be proven to join - if not to have been basically bred to the right, as was Howl - to the latter. People in the higher ranks of the Ministry of Magic, and certain professors within Hogwarts - on a need-to-know basis - would have heard of it. And, of course - Howl would not even be admitted as a transfer student if it was not an accepted branch of the schools across the world that taught in the magic arts, in the first place. But it is far from popular knowledge amongst the magic society in general.

Part of keeping such a place a secret is that it is not in any muggle book, and very difficult to find by anyone who is not indeed a witch or wizard. Rather, you would have been able to learn about Mount Iwaki in tourism-type books, and learned that it is a sacred place, and of points of interest such as the apple orchards that flourish there.

Still, only those in the small village nearby know of these priests of the Order of the Eternal Dragon. They are largely a legend to the townsfolk - for these priests aid those people now and again, and they in turn, keep their secret - and proceed with care when traveling throughout that mountain. None of them have actually seen the temple, though they know of their priests - and few have interacted with them throughout history. Howl's parents, in fact, were one of the few individuals with ties to the temple - that had taken up residence in that small village. The families of the rest of those in the temple, were actually scattered throughout Honshu, and Japan's other islands.

The manner of teaching magics at this temple is in a more spiritually-based manner, in sync with the ancient traditions of Japanese culture. They have largely many of the same spells as the rest of the Western world. They also have a few of their own - utilizing kanji, in which by the utterance of specific magic phrases - Japanese characters appear on strips of paper and thus, the paper takes on magical properties which when thrown, produce certain effects. Part of Howl's challenge at Hogwarts is perfecting his use of spell-casting by use of the wand. In fact, any casual observer might presume Howl's wizarding skills to be very poor - ignorant of where his true strengths lay.

Family Secrets

Once upon a time, a wizard with the ability to transform into a Fireball Dragon, was torn between his power and his family. It was when he arrived at the temple at Mount Iwaki that was thought to be mere myth, where the priests helped him to gain control of his powers, and strengthen the bonds between he and his family. This temple was so named for him.

It this very temple which Howl has called home since his early youth. He was encouraged to become accomplished in his birthright - that of an animagus. The Temple where he grew up, trained Howl in this. They recognized his abilities, especially the fact being that someone very near in his family tree to him - was an animagus. Usually it skips many generations in Howl's family. Now and again - such as with Howl and his family member - this ability manifests within two generations, in tandem. This other member is, of course, Howl's father.

Pure Blood

Howl is what's known as a Pure Blood, thanks to his mother and father. Howl's mother Sakura, an accomplished Potions mistress, was born in England. His father Ryuu Tatsuya had just set up residence, there, when he met her - sent on a mission which required he remain in England for a lengthy period of time.

By the time Howl's father was ready to return to Japan a few years later, they had fallen in love, and she had agreed to marry him - and go to live with him there. On top of that, she had some family in Japan which she had never had the chance to get to know - being born and raised in England. But, Howl's mother is of Japanese origin, as well. Her grandparents had moved to England long before she was born.

With parents born and raised in two different countries, Howl was taught to speak both languages early on - that of his homeland, and that of his mother's. It was presumed that Howl would visit family one day back in England, and that it would be only proper that he could communicate with his relatives, on both sides of his family. But, as it turns out - now Howl has a reason, more than just family, to make use of his English-speaking ability. Now he is a Ravenclaw student at Hogwarts.
