History: Born into a wealthy—but loveless—family, Guy Gardner found himself constantly compared to his older, more successful brother Edward by his parents. Still, he loved his brother, and took solace in the fact that he excelled in marksmanship and his faith in God. However, this bond was tested the day that their mother, tired of years of infidelity and otherwise cruel treatment, asked her two sons to kill their father. Guy refused, but Edward agreed to do it, and locked his brother in a boathouse before he could warn him. Kicking down the boathouse door, Guy grabbed a rifle and, finding himself locked out of the house, climbed a tree just in time to see Edward confront his father in the library. Not wanting to seriously hurt his brother, he attempted to shoot Edward in the arm—to make him drop his gun—but the tree branch he was sitting on gave way, dropping Guy and making his shot go bad. In the end, Edward succeeded in shooting his father through the heart, killing him, but was shot dead the next moment by his brother’s errant bullet. Not wanting to drag the Gardner name through the mud, the surviving family members used their influence to squelch the investigation, and the murders went unsolved. Still, the damage was done, as Guy—tormented by his brother’s death and a mother who loathed him for taking away her favored son, he developed a powerful sense of self-loathing and the belief that life was just not worth living.

It was then during a confession to Father Tomas the priest at the family’s church that it was God’s punishment for his brother, to be shot by Guy. Edward sought to kill his father, even if it was at his mother’s request Edward was breaking God’s solemn commandments. Guy only sought to wound his brother, thereby stopping him from committing murder. But God had other plans and used Guy as an instrument of his will. Father Tomas counseled the boy further showing him how God could make use of his gifts. Training the boy in use of all firearms and how to use Guy’s abilities in punishment of evil, after a car accident that left his mother dead, father Tomas told Guy the story behind the green ring with an emerald setting he wore.

Offering him a place among God’s warrior in the Emerald Twilight Society and a mission that would bring purpose to his life, Guy accepted. Later to find that father Tomas was The Ganthet himself.

Upon completion of his training it was decided to give Guy a costumed alter ego named Deadshot, playing off his inhuman abilities with firearms. Taking a pair of silenced, wrist-mounted Colt revolvers as his trademarks, he is able to use any know firearm.

As Deadshoot, Gardner wears a red jumpsuit and distinctive metal face plate with a targeting device on the right side.
