She was born in Detroit, but moved to Cleveland when she was eight. Her father is a hard-working man who earned a steady living as a stone mason. Her mother worked part time, mostly in clerical jobs.
Emma has an older brother and a younger sister. Her family still lives in Cleveland.
Emma is a curious girl who lost her virginity in her senior year of hight school. But she was not and is not particularly easy. She does have some undeveloped sexual interests.
She dates interracially, but doesn't trust white men as much as black or Asian men. She finds that they expect a black woman to "put out" at the snap of their fingers.
